Tabitha Knell was born in Sitka and raised in Dillingham, Alaska. She is Yup’ik, from the Manokotak tribe, and Scandinavian. She is primarily self taught, but comes from a long line of artisans, including her grandmother, Anuska Cingliak Nanalook, a well known basket maker. She grew up subsisting and commercial fishing and incorporates themes of animal life and subsistence into her work. She utilizes technology to create unique designs with a laser, then paints, adds resin and beadwork to make wearable art that reflects the beauty of Alaska.
