
Laureli V. Ivanoff
Laureli Ivanoff is an Inupiaq and Yup’ik writer from Unalakleet, Alaska, now based in Anchorage. A journalist and storyteller, she earned a BA in Journalism from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and an MFA in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Her work—featured in High Country News, The New York Times, Anchorage Daily News, and Outside Magazine—explores Alaska Native lifeways, food sovereignty, and the deep relationships between people, land, water, and animals.
Laureli’s High Country News column Lifeways earned the 2024 James Beard Journalism Award, and she is also a recipient of the Alaska Literary Award and the Governor’s Arts & Humanities Award. A former News Director at KNOM Radio, she continues to write, advocate, and speak about the importance of Native food systems and cultural resilience. Beyond the page, she can often be found cutting fish, making seal oil, and tending to the harvests that sustain her community and family.
