Alice Tunuunataq Bioff is an Inupiaq entrepreneur from Koyuk, Alaska, and the founder of Naataq Gear LLC, an Indigenous-owned apparel company based in Nome. Established in 2018, Naataq Gear blends traditional Alaska Native clothing designs with modern materials, creating functional garments that honor her cultural heritage.
Growing up in Koyuk, Bioff was immersed in a community rich with sewing traditions. She was surrounded by women who crafted atikluks and qaspeqs. Her mother was an avid sewer who played a significant role in nurturing her appreciation for traditional clothing. These early experiences influenced Bioff's passion for cultural expression through fashion.
The idea for Naataq Gear was sparked during Bioff's time as a tour guide during the cruise ship Crystal Serenity's first visit to Nome. A passenger admired her traditional kuspuk and inquired if it was waterproof. This question led Bioff to envision a modern, weather-resistant version of the garment. After years of development, she launched the Atmik jacket, a water-resistant, windproof, and breathable outerwear piece inspired by the traditional qaspeq. Today, Naataq Gear offers not only the Atmik Jacket, but also the Siku Men's Jacket, Anugi Windbreaker, Nuna Fleece Vest, Atmik Youth Jackets and finally the newest addition, scrubs.
